Which should you use, and or but? The coordinating conjunction and is used to connect similar ideas. The coordinating conjunction but is used to connect contrasting ideas. Do not use the wrong word. Here is an example.

Incorrect: He knew it was wrong, and he didn’t care.
Correct: He knew it was wrong, but he didn’t care.
