Semicolon Error

The semicolon has its own special uses and is not interchangeable with the colon. Here is an example in which the semicolon is not used correctly.

“She longed for things she could never have; a home, a family …

This sentence has a semicolon error. The semicolon is used to separate, not to introduce. To correct this sentence, change the semicolon to a colon.

She longed for things she could never have: a home, a family …
