Verb Tense Error Example 1

What’s wrong with this sentence?

“When she had had time to think clearly, she would understand that he was only trying to help.”

The past perfect tense is used to talk about a past action that happened before another past action. In the quoted sentence, both clauses refer to the same past time period. The past perfect tense should not be used in the subordinate clause. To correct the sentence, change had had to had.

When she had time to think clearly, she would understand that he was only trying to help.
