Which should you use, shear offsheer? To shear off means to cut off or break off. To sheer off means to deviate from a course.

Correct: The ship sheered off to the left.
Incorrect: In the story, the dragon sheered off the top of the mountain.
Correct: In the story, the dragon sheared off the top of the mountain.
