Which should you use, tears or tiers? Tears are drops of salty liquid that flow from the eye. The noun tier means one of several layers or levels. Do not confuse tears with tiers.

Incorrect: He felt tiers in his eyes.
Correct: He felt tears in his eyes.
Incorrect: They redistributed those unused wages to the upper tears of management.
Correct: They redistributed those unused wages to the upper tiers of management.
