Which should you use, self-afflicted or self-inflicted? To inflict something on someone means to force someone to experience something very unpleasant. If an injury or a problem is self-inflicted, you have caused it yourself. Self-afflicted is incorrect.

Incorrect: He was believed to be insane because of the number of self-afflicted wounds.
Correct: He was believed to be insane because of the number of self-inflicted wounds.
