Which should you use, adverse or averse? The adjective adverse means to have a negative effect on something. The adjective averse is used after the verb be to mean not liking something.

Incorrect: The match was cancelled because of averse weather conditions.
Correct: The match was cancelled because of adverse weather conditions.
Incorrect: I am not adverse to the idea.
Correct: I am not averse to the idea.
