shall, should

Which should you use, shall or should? One use of shall is to express requirements, specifications, and regulations in the third person.

Correct: Passengers shall be counted prior to departure.
Correct: The building shall be designed to support the following loads.
Correct: An owner or keeper of any animal shall be held strictly liable for any damages.

Shall is also used with the first person to talk about the future.

Correct: I shall be there.
Correct: We shall be happy.

One use of should is to express one's duty or obligation. Should is used with all three persons.

Correct: We should be prompt.
Correct: You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Correct: Passengers should be belted.

Another use of should is to express probabiltiy.

Correct: Your car should be ready this afternoon.
Correct: They should be here by now.
