Which should you use, ban or trespass? The verb ban means to forbid something, especially officially. Ban takes the preposition from. Trespass is an intransitive verb meaning to go into a place without the owner’s permission; trespass takes the preposition on. Trespass is also an old word meaning to do something that is not allowed by a moral law. Do not use trespass to mean ban.

Incorrect: He has been trespassed from the university.
Correct: He has been banned from the university.
