Which should you use, allowed or aloud? The adverb aloud means in a voice loud enough to be heard. Allowed is the past and the past participle form of the verb allow, meaning to give permission for someone to do something.

Incorrect: Women were not aloud to play golf.
Correct: Women were not allowed to play golf.
Incorrect: Try to read your sentences allowed.
Correct: Try to read your sentences aloud.
