Which should you use, upward or upwards? The adjective upward may mean moving or turned towards a higher position, or moving towards a higher level or amount; upward is used only before a noun. The adverb upwards may mean towards a higher position or level, or more than a particular number or amount. Do not use upwards before a noun.

Incorrect: Stress is on an upwards trend.
Correct: Stress is on an upward trend.
